for my whole life ive had a deep hatred of the oxford comma

but now my english teacher is forcing me to use it

it’s so pointless, ugly, unnecessary and stupid.

why add it? it makes list look full, difficult to read, busy, and complicated.

it does help with amiguity. e.g. if if you met up with 4 people (your parents + someone named john + someone named sandra), you might say “today I saw my parents, john and sandra”. That's ambiguous and to me suggests that your parents are named john and sandra. Having an oxford comma prevemts that ambiguity: “today I met my parents, john, and sandra”.

having said that, i see what you did there…

i’ve always felt that not having an oxford comma makes it seem like the next-to-last and last items in the list are more like each other than the other items in the list, but that being said i don’t think that english teachers should enforce using it (or not using it)
