sometimes i kinda forget that elon musk even renamed twitter in the first place
like the old name has so much staying power that wikipedia still uses the old name for its article’s title just because that’s almost universally accepted as the more recognizable name, i don’t think i’ve seen something like that happen before (at least not for going on three years now)
yeah
i mean i think i’ve heard someone say that we actually should call it X because at this point it isn’t even recognizable as the old twitter, but i think it was probabl ironically, and i don’t think anyone calls it X unironically, like ever
to be fair, twitter right before elon musk bought it was practically unrecognizable compared to what twitter was originally
twitter was supposed to be a microblogging site so people could post mundane updates on their life (e.g. “i made mac and cheese :D”) instead of making a big stink about it in a long form blog post
what twitter became (and still is), as gumball puts it, was “more like a bare-knuckle fight to see who's the most tolerant person on the internet” lol
british people when someone calls it “a bare-knuckle fight” and not “a battle of fisticuffs”:
the fact that tweet is a verb makes you realize how powerful the name was. it was pretty cheesy but people actually got used to it. imagine someone changed the name of YouTube. what would happen to all the YouTubers? that’s why it’s so crazy. it had this great foundation that everyone had heard of and then Elon Musk changed it to X like everything else he makes. he’s got an obsession with Xs..
