Reddit can be a fine place, especially if you find the right communities. While you might encounter some vile/disgusting/jerkish people, that's unfortunately a reality of anywhere online. The key (from my experience) is to find subreddits that align with your interests etc.

people ironically bash on Reddit so much without realizing there is WAY worse communities out there, reddit is only portrayed as bad because of the YouTube videos out there and stuff
