I don’t like the way tone tags look, but I still use them out of courtesy. I wouldn’t use it in this instance though.
There are people that genuinely aren’t able to understand things like this, and it’s really helpful for them
Oh tone tags can be helpful but come on, you should be able to identify that they aren’t in 2048 without a tone tag
People would be able to tell that they’re not in 2048 because that’s not possible, but the actual intentions of this would not actually be clear to many people.
oh i’m not making fun of tone tags in general but just this instance
No but this also applies in this instance
but the tone tag here isn’t necessary, since like you said “People would be able to tell that they’re not in 2048 because that’s not possible”
but someone might not know that you're joking and could think that you're genuinely confused (i think that's @mybearworld 's point)
That I’m joking? I know what tonetags are and that they are helpful non some contexts but aren’t here (people should know you aren’t in 2048 as time travel isn’t possible), which is what I’m joking about
people might not know that @KuromiNotTaken was joking. (they might think that @KuromiNotTaken is confused)
Are you serious? People might not know that someone saying that they are in 2048, a year 15 years away, is joking, and instead may be confused what year they are in? How can you be confused what year you’re in, let alone think you’re in a year in 25 years? Is this how woke we’ve become?
You may find it obvious. Some people don’t. This is a fact.
You need common sense here, not tone tags. This is a fact.
And a lot of people simply just can’t. This is like saying “don’t be sad” to someone who’s depressed (this is not a perfect example, but good enough)
Anyone over 7 has the common sense that time travel isn’t real. It’s a fact you can’t go into 2048. A tone tag isn’t needed.
Yes, they’ll know time travel isn’t real, but they still won’t know why KuromiNotTaken posted that.
If they know it’s not real, they know it’s a joke, thus the tag is not needed!
Doesn't necessarily have to be one. It could be confusion, a typo…
How can a person be confused what year they are in, already said
You can’t typo “2023” as “2048”, not near on keyboard, invalid
some people are confused what year they’re in. go on tiktok and you’ll find plenty of people who claim to be timetravelers. what me and @mybearworld are saying is that tone indicators do help to show whether you or joking or not.
And anyone with common sense knows it’s a joke and time travelling isn’t real so a tone tag isn’t needed
but just because you know time travelling isn't real doesn't mean you know that someone else knows that.
Non-native speaker?
What if you happen to have the number 48 in mind and accidentally type 2048 instead? Happens to me every now and then. And what if someone uses some sort of ergonomic keyboard where 3 and 8 much more closer than on regular QWERTY?
And what if someone simply can't go through this thought process everytime they see an incorrect statement?
Come on, stop making excuses
The point is, there's always a possibility. Two characters aren't a lot to type and help a lot.
There’s no way someone is thinking 2048 on New Year’s Day when this was taken, a year 25 away, stop making excuses
0.01% of the population needs them. not going to change the way i type for that 0.01%
If I know people need them I will use them though since they can be helpful, but common sense is needed here to analysis that the tone tag here is ridiculous
could you not please, some people do genuinely need them.
really? People really need a tone tag to identify “I’m in 2048” is a joke?
also, mybearworld’s point: not everyone has perfect “common sense”. someone could think it’s a typo, non-native speaker etc. i’ve been in a very similar situation myself and while i am able to discern tone 80% of the time, they are still nice to have when that 20% comes around
(context: i’m autistic)
I have ADHD and also can struggle to identify contexts, but this is ridiculous. Knowing time travelling doesn’t exist is a basic fact anyone over the age of 6 should know and if someone is that dumb, than use google
Yes, people can probably deduce that it isn't serious. The exact meaning, though, isn't clear.
