random question. (be honest i don’t mind).
if i were to add donations/paid tier/merch to wasteof, would anybody be willing to actually donate? would pay for domain, hosting, infra, etc. fees.
yes, i would donate ($10+)
I would donate but only if I get sometimes in return (eg. profile badge, merch, or premium site features)
i might donate
i would never donate (this is totally fine)
I would definitely donate if I found myself with a bunch of extra cash I didn’t know what to do with.
id totally donate, as long as it isnt a twitter blue esque with premium features.
id also buy merch :D wasteof dysphoria hoodie ftw
I think the best way about this IMO is similar to albumoftheyear.org - they have different donation tiers you can choose from, and all of them get you a badge to indicate you’re a supporter. I think having say a minimum donation amount (whatever makes sense for you) that can be increased if someone chooses would be a good option, and you get a badge on your profile to show you’ve donated. Personally, I’m somewhat against the idea of putting features behind a paywall of sorts and also making verification paid for like what Twitter and Meta are doing, but that’s my personal thoughts.
I think setting up a merch store would be a waste of money and time, I can only see Oren and maybe a few more buying it. I would like to donate, but would you get any of my financial details? If so then no sorry, I’m not comfortable with that.
yeah, i think something like GitHub sponsors or Patreon would be a better, safer alternative. :)
I'd love to but I'm not convinced I would because money… maybe in a few years if wasteof's still around then
I donate ten bucks to Wikipedia every year.
If you make a strong enough case about wasteof being important in the way Wikipedia does, I’d give you ten bucks too.
+1
I'm not sure if wasteof is designed to be "important" really, but it definitely is unique as being the only social media run at such a small scale and having such an active core community.
There’s a case to be made for importance within that active core community; something about unfiltered conversation without underlying motivations of profit.
When I say “in the way Wikipedia does,” I don’t mean Wikipedia and wasteof offer the same sort of value. I mean that the case could be made in a way that explains why wasteof is important, how wasteof aims to improve and continue to be important, and what (money) wasteof needs to achieve this.
Ah, okay, I misunderstood your comment. That's completely reasonable. I'd love to see some sort of public roadmap for the platform too. As far as money, I think it could be explained that donations/merch would help cover server costs and help out jeffalo since he singlehandedly builds the platform.
