It’s great. Just make the mark as read thing little bit similar to github's (each message gets its own markasread button when hovering)

You could make it like scratch. I have a suggestion too: Why not make something like Facebook Messenger, so it can be private messages, but in the same site. I think everyone here is 13+ so it would be okay, right?

Maybe they should be grouped by like type or something

Personally I'm a big fan of the current messages system! The only thing I might change is automatically marking a message read when you click the link in the message. Like others below, I also forget to mark them as read sometimes.

Often times I’ve clicked off of the messages tab without marking the messages as read. Honestly I do like how it’s not too sensitive in doing that, but I can see that it should probably be streamlined somehow
