As qwerty focuses on the most common letters being as far as possible from each other to prevent early typewriter keys from jamming, dvorak focuses on ergonomics and has vowels on one side and consonants on the other. Alternatives such as Colemak focus on the main typing experience and distributes common letters in one place. Other keyboard layouts including workman may be used too.
