Fun fact: the reason old movies looks grainy in dark scenes is because the film used to film them has lower resolution

Analog film is made up of silver halide crystals, which become less sensitive to light the smaller they are. To make them more sensitive, the crystals must be larger, and as such, there are less of them. Therefore, lower resolution.
